“Meet Alethia: Leader, Advocate, and Storyteller”

Finding My Voice

I still remember that boardroom silence. Not a word was spoken, but the question hung in the air: “Do you belong here?” As the only Black woman at the table, I felt it daily – the subtle dismissals, the overlooked contributions, the constant need to prove myself worthy of my seat.
Early in my career, I juggled it all: working full-time, raising my family, pursuing education, and navigating spaces not designed with me in mind. The message was clear though never spoken aloud: stay small, stay quiet, be grateful.
I refused.

The Words That Changed Everything

You don’t just deserve a seat at this table – you belong at every table where decisions are made.”
When my mentor spoke these words, something shifted. It wasn’t just validation; it was permission to embrace what I already knew deep down. This moment fueled my pursuit of an MBA in Leadership while climbing the ranks in my career.
But securing my own position was never enough.

Building Tables Where Everyone Belongs

In June 2020, as conversations about racial justice intensified, I founded the Dufferin County Canadian Black Association (DCCBA). This wasn’t just a response to the moment—it was a commitment to long-term change. That same year, I chaired Shelburne’s anti-racism task force and a few years later was appointed as School Board Trustee. Each role became another opportunity to create space – not just for myself, but for everyone told they don’t belong.

I championed the first Black History Month in Dufferin County and spearheaded the first Pan African Flag raising ceremony. These weren’t just events; they were visible declarations that we all deserve recognition.

Through the DCCBA, I also established scholarships and mentorship programs designed to uplift Black students—ensuring they, too, have the resources, support, and opportunities to claim their seat at the table. Because true inclusion isn’t just about being invited—it’s about having the power to participate, contribute, and lead.

Leading Beyond Limits

Today, my leadership flows through many channels. Through “In Conversation with Alethia,” I create dialogue about community and change. Through speaking engagements, I help others recognize their worth. Through every interaction, I embody my personal mantra: “Stop Playing Small.”
The skeptical glances haven’t disappeared entirely, but now I meet them with the quiet confidence of someone who knows her value. My story isn’t just mine – it belongs to everyone who’s been told to doubt their worth.
This journey continues. My upcoming book will share what I’ve learned: that leadership isn’t about titles but impact, that true leaders create spaces where people feel seen, and that claiming your seat is both deeply personal and profoundly powerful.
Remember: “With confidence you have won before you have started.”
This is how we claim our seats – at every table.
